Backup Control Suite for NetWorker

FiRST LOGIC is a highly skilled support provider of EMC software with a strong NetWorker base. BackupCS for NetWorker grew from a set of customised tools addressing gaps in NetWorker functionality and providing diagnostic tools for support. They an easy to use, readily available toolset to save you time.

Backup Control Suite from FiRST LOGIC provides improved backup management, automation and reporting of your NetWorker environment. Administrative tasks are simplified and automated with varying levels of reporting for managers through to administrators. Amongst the many features BackupCS provides

BackupCS runs on Windows, Linux and Solaris. The following table describes the basic functionality of each command. Full documentation is available here.

Command Functionality
backup-report
  • Produce and email a standard report for either the previous days backup or a nominated period of time in CSV, HTML or Excel.
check-clients
  • Perform a variety of connectivity, stability and performance related tests on one or more clients
  • Rapidly assemble data that can be used when logging support calls
  • Run centralised client performance testing

client-report

  • Document the client configuration in CSV, HTML or XLS
  • Standard detailed report for administrators
  • Executive report for management and other staff to show what is being backed up
  • Filter on groups, clients and savesets

dbufree

  • Allows administrators to quickly free staging space by specifying the amount of data to be staged from any device
  • Specify a maximum size of stage portion and how long to pause between stage operations
  • Skip larger savesets in order to free up space faster
  • Allows evacuation of disk backup units that are experiencing hardware issues and require relocation of data
  • Selectively target savesets based on level, group, client name, or any other valid mminfo query criteria

deptree

  • Build a visual representation of savesets relationships
  • Assist in establishing full backups are occurring
  • Determine why volumes are not recycling

devmon

  • Write device performance statistics in CSV format
  • Build device activity profiles over an extended period of time for easy analysis in spreadsheet software

find-files

  • Search client indexes for files regardless of client or saveset
  • Automate file searches and volume/saveset discovery
  • Exclude criteria from search to narrow results

group-control

  • Stop/start/restart a group
  • Report on group status - idle/running/failed/successful/clone failure or success

backup-notify

  • Sends savegroup completion notifications with group status in the subject
  • Filter out irrelevant output
  • Add data totals to the email
  • Report when the last full for that client occured
  • Include diagnostics and failure analysis in emails

list-resources

  • Quickly list the names of all or individual resource types
  • List the name and specified fields for any resource type
  • Output using desired field separator
  • Useful in your own scripts that inetract with NetWorker

mediafree

  • Primarily for VTL use to free up media
  • Provides a user specified count of volumes with all savesets cloned
  • Optionally relabel those volumes into a chosen pool or a scratch pool

recyclable-volumes

  • Produce a list of volumes ready for recycling
  • Order recyclable volumes by last access time or barcode
  • Email recyclable volume report for automated notification to operators

review-res

  • Document a complete NetWorker configuration in HTML format
  • Different levels of verbosity
  • Able to read a zip file of the res directory
  • Advises of potential issues in the configuration
sslocate
  • Used to report on and manage cloning
  • Can locate and report on savesets from a source pool being present for one or more target pools
  • Can locate and report on savesets from a source pool being missing for one or more target pools
  • Clone savesets missing in one or more target pools
  • Specify a maximum size of clone portion and how long to pause between clone operations to allow access to devices by other operations
  • Reports to screen, CSV or XLS with emailing of reports
  • Accepts additional arguments in mminfo format
